How To Use Construction Adhesives in Freezing Conditions

Mid-built structure with snow and blue tarp on ground

LIQUID NAILS has a selection of construction adhesives that will adhere in freezing conditions. This can be challenging and can lead to long-term issues if not applied correctly, however it can be done with ease using LIQUID NAILS Subfloor and Deck Construction Adhesive (LN-902), LIQUID NAILS Extreme Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive (LN-907), or LIQUID NAILS FUZE*IT All Surface Construction Adhesive (LN-2000). These adhesives have been tested for cold and certified by an independent third-party testing laboratory.

LIQUID NAILS Subfloor and Deck Construction Adhesive and LIQUID NAILS Extreme Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive can be applied in temperatures as low as 22°F.  LIQUID NAILS FUZE*IT All Surface Construction Adhesive can be applied in temperatures as low as 0°F.

When applying construction adhesives in cold temperatures:

Step 1.

First, remove as much ice, snow and moisture from the bonding surfaces as possible.
(Water — frozen or otherwise — will prevent most construction adhesives from contacting the bonding surface, resulting in a poor bond.

Step 2.

Check the weather. You want to make sure the adhesive can dry or cure properly in your current weather conditions. Depending on the type of adhesive you are using, cold temperatures, rain, or snow can have varying effects on your adhesive.

Step 3.

When facing both cold and wet, moisture-curing adhesives like FUZE*IT will work best. Subfloor and Deck Construction Adhesives and Extreme Heavy Duty Construction Adhesive can also be used in cold temperatures on wet and frozen lumber, but tend to cure more slowly.

Step 4.

Keep your construction adhesives as warm as possible until use.

Step 5.

Bundle up with proper cold weather gear and be sure to wear gloves.

Step 6.

Apply construction adhesives so that surfaces can be joined quickly.

Step 7.

Press down on the adhesive to ensure proper coverage and let go.

Step 8.

Nail or screw in fasteners as quickly as possible after installation.

Step 9.

Allow the adhesive to dry for the recommended period of time. Times may vary depending temperature and humidity.
